Let's say you woke up tomorrow and decided to stop talking...
How do you think this would effect your life? Would it be a positive or negative influence on your existence? How long would it be before you had to start speaking again?
I'm interested to know.
My name is Shayne Brandel, and I'm an artist living in Nelson B.C. Canada. On March 6th 2010 I stopped talking. I do not know how long my silence will last.
To archive the experience, I am making one small work of art each day. The pieces will be cataloged on this blog.
Welcome to the Silence Project.
Posts surrounded by ** were days without writing or typing of any kind.
Hi Shayne . This is Jim. I met you at the TNT Playhouse when I was giving Adriana a hand with the stage .I thank you for the challenge. I spent your birthday with a vow of silence . It was a very interesting day to say the least. I went out to visit friends and went to Oso for coffee afterwards , but the most challenging was when I went to the Cocoa-Nut Lounge for the Tuesday night music jam . There I ran into all kinds of people of which I new quite a few .It sure was interesting to see the different reactions from people .Some people whispered and some talked quite a bit louder . LOL .Others did not know how to react and one person even wrote me back a couple of times . I also had a few people trying to fool me into talking .I did use a pad of paper to communicate , but I also tried to use body motion . Meanwhile , inside my head , it was very interesting as times I felt anxiety coming on and I felt like I was holding my breath and I couldn't breath . My inside voice was screaming to get out ! Quite the experience !! I really learned a lot about myself and about other people in general .I did have two minor slip ups during the day . One was when I was down at the beach and a dog came by and without realizing , I called out "come here boy" .Another was at the jam . I had written to a friend that I get so excited about the music that I almost let out a comment after a good song . I shared this note with a few people , and then it happened . I let out a "right on" after a particularly good song . I caught myself and looked around ,but I don't think anyone else noticed . LOL .Thank you for inspiring me on this "thought" challenge !! Adriana passed this my way .I realize you are learning lots about yourself and people in general . It is also amazing how we treat people with a handicap .We act nice but different . That must take some getting used to .I see through a new set of eyes !!

ReplyDeleteDo you mind if I use your post for future publication / discussion of the project?
